Cycle Blackpool

Campaign Strategy Bookmark and Share

Cycle Blackpool exists to give people the opportunity and desire to get on a bike. Cycling is a great way to be more healthy - it's also environmentally friendly and a very cheap way of getting about.

What we are doing to encourage more cycling

  • providing cycle training for adults and school children
  • developing cycle routes across the town
  • installing cycle storage in schools, offices and town centre locations
  • setting up cycle clubs
  • providing coaching for sporting hopefuls
  • developing a town-wide hire bike facility for both residents and visitors
  • developing cycle facilities especially for young people

Sadly, at the moment, Blackpool has some of the lowest levels of adult participation in sport and physical activity in the country. Car ownership is low, and Blackpool's largely flat terrain and urban layout enables most local trips to be achieved by a short bike ride.

Why you should join in

Cycling is healthy. There is strong evidence that the health benefits of cycling outweigh any risks.

Cycling can be slotted into everyday life, enabling people to benefit their health without having to set aside time for 'exercise'.

Unlike team sports, exercise classes or other dedicated forms of activity, cycling can be slotted into everyday life, substituting for the school run or commute to deliver considerable advantages along the way:

Cycling for just thirty minutes most days, combined with a reduced calorie intake, can achieve a weight loss equivalent to the reduction achieved by three weekly aerobics classes.
