Getting out and about on your bike will save you loads of money, get you fitter than before and above all, be fun. Unfortunately, your bike can be a target for bike thieves, so check through the following advice.

  • Use good quality locks, research your lock using sites like http://www.soldsecure.com, and of course get advice from your local bike shop and peers
  • Lock both wheels and the frame to a bike stand or strong immoveable object.
  • Lock it tight so its hard to move when parked. Secure your lock so it does not touch the ground
  • Use two locks of different construction (strong d lock and sturdy chain) thieves dont like carrying different tools to overcome each lock.

The next thing to do is to look at your overall security package:

Registration is important so that your cycle can be returned to you in the event it is recovered. Websites like Immobilise will allow you to record your cycle details as well as scan original receipts/photos and record specific details of your bike.  Datatag or Alphadot provide similar services.

These services are also searchable to police officers nationally, should they stop someone riding a cycle it can be checked on the street. If the owner has registered it as stolen they can arrest recover property and MOST importantly trace the owner to the bike.

Finally, check if your home insurance covers your cycle when away from home and the level of cover ie is the cover sufficient for the value of the bike.
