Bikes and Christmas go hand-in-hand like sage and onion stuffing, don't go out and buy the wrong bike before reading our top tips.
1. Think about how the bike will be used. If you're going to be doing stunts at the local park it's probably best not to buy a road bike whereas a BMX will probably suit this usage.
2. Think about the comfort of the ride. If it's to be used for cycling more than 3 miles it might be better to buy something with a very comfortable saddle.
3. At the same time it's good to consider what surface the bike will be ridden on for example a road bike with thin tyres won't be good for off-road use whereas a mountain bike with thicker tyres might be more appropriate.
4. Spend as much as you can afford, and shop around. As a rule of thumb you pay for what you get when it comes to bikes. Don't get your bike from the first shop you go into either, ask friends and family about where they went for their bike and if the level of customer service was good.
5. Make sure that the bike fits you properly and there is enough height on the seat post so that it can be made higher.
6. Be bright and be seen when you're out on your new bike. If you're going to ride the bike at night you're going to need front and back lights and reflective high vis reflectors so that you are seen more easily.
7. Make sure that you're safe when you go out with your bike. Invest in a quality bike lock and helmet.
